What Is Orthognathic Surgery?

Orthognathic surgery is also known as “jaw surgery.” This procedure involves correcting the jaw position whenever there is a significant discrepancy present – usually a severe overbite or underbite. The surgery is usually done in conjunction with orthodontic treatment (braces or clear aligners). Most people who get orthodontic treatment don’t need jaw surgery. However, if your bite and/or jaw alignment is severe, then surgery may be an option.

Improving your bite and jaw alignment

Enhancing facial balance

Orthognathic surgery can improve facial balance. By correcting an underbite or overbite, the jaws better align and look more esthetic.

Improving facial symmetry

While almost everyone has some minor level of facial asymmetry, in more severe cases jaw surgery can help to improve facial esthetics by regaining facial symmetry. Of course, an added benefit to this is an improved bite and improved function as well.

What Can I Expect From The Orthognathic Surgery Process?

A treatment plan that calls for orthognathic surgery requires that your orthodontist and your oral surgeon work as a team. In most cases, patients will begin orthodontic treatment first to set up their bite so that they are ready for surgery. The orthodontist and oral surgeon will then collaborate during the surgical planning phase in order to ensure a predictable outcome. After surgery, orthodontic treatment will resume until all corrections have been made. This final phase of treatment helps to “fine-tune” the position of the teeth.
